Prerequisites
Basic understanding of applications, networking, and protocols
Basic understanding of IT issues as they pertain to networks, applications, and systems
Basic knowledge of SONET and WDM technology and multiplexing hierarchy.
Description
Today's networks often use several different technologies. For example, IP networks can be implemented over ATM, MPLS, SONET, or WDM. These technologies are usually represented as individual layers that exchange information with other layers in a hierarchical fashion. Each layer is typically operated as a network on its own. When an organization is responsible for building or maintaining more than one layer, multi-layer planning and design becomes an essential part of the operational process.
The OPNET solutions can help you streamline the planning and design operations for the different network layers, each of which might be the responsibility of different departments in an organization. The goal is to automate processes that must exchange information between layers and to prevent misconfiguration and suboptimal network designs across multiple layers. Understanding the relationship between protection and performance at upper layers and protection at lower layers is key to ensuring the survivability of a network.
SP Guru lets service providers intelligently manage large-scale, multi-technology, multi-vendor networks. SP Guru delivers capabilities for strategic network planning and architecture design. In addition, it provides operational network management, including troubleshooting, configuration validation, and traffic engineering. SP Guru is essential for service providers deploying Layer-2/3 VPNS, optimizing capacity on multi-vendor networks, assessing the readiness of the network for VoIP deployments, implementing MPLS-based traffic engineering, or planning MPLS Fast Re-route protection.
This session includes lectures and labs and presents the methodologies and essential features of SP Guru Network Planner. It introduces you to the concepts and workflows needed to use SP Guru Network Planner effectively. The strategies and ideas presented in the lecture are reinforced through labs that showcase the capabilities of SP Guru Network Planner and teach you how to perform real world analyses.
This session also uses the SP Guru With Interlayer Modeling (SWIM) framework to study and design multi-layer networks. It focuses on analyzing Layer-2/Layer-3 networks that are supported by an underlying (optical) transport infrastructure. Labs use SP Guru Network Planner and SP Guru Transport Planner as an integrated environment to demonstrate how the network layers affect each other under normal and failure conditions.
