Description
We don't talk to computers in zeros and ones; the history of computing is a history of virtualization. However, issues facing IT professionals for virtualization evolve as technologies change.
In this session, we will discuss current issues associated with server consolidation and virtualization in performance measurement, virtualization overhead, modeling, and capacity planning, and the underpinning of virtualization, that is, increasing efficiency and reducing overall IT cost. We highlight the best practices and rules of thumb that will help you understand and navigate the abstraction layers separating the end users and applications from the hardware that actually gets the work done. In addition to the lecture, there are labs that allow you to gain some hands-on experience. The labs focus on the following aspects using IT Guru Systems Planner / Virtual Machine Quick Predict (VMQP):
- Performance data collection and import
- Workload characterization
- Server consolidation and “what-if” analysis in a virtualized environment
The following topics are covered:
- Review methodologies for workload characterization and time period selection
- Performance data collection and import
- Analyzing workload combinations for consolidation
- Creating performance models of consolidated servers
- Predicting application performance after server consolidation
- Evaluating the performance impact of virtualization overhead
- Predicting the impact of upgrading server hardware in an virtualized environment
