Dell uses OPNET Panorama and ACE Analyst for performance troubleshooting and insight into optimization opportunities for more than 400 critical production applications that drive revenue for their business. These include customer-facing websites (e-commerce and support), an internal order entry sales application, and several key manufacturing applications for inventory management and shipment of products.
Jason’s team was brought in to troubleshoot Dell’s Sales Entry Application (IDD) because the sales team complained of slowness that was preventing them from entering orders and was reducing the number of order-generating calls they could support in a day. They leveraged Panorama to analyze the most critical transactions in the order entry process, hoping to identify optimization opportunities.
The results were impressive! They reduced the “handle time” for seven critical transactions from as much as 30 seconds down to 2 seconds. Their efforts enabled a typical sales rep to handle one additional call per day due to improvements from insight provided by OPNET software. Trouble tickets submitted for IDD fell from 700 to 100 in the quarter following the optimization. With more than 30,000 IDD users, the projected savings and revenue increases are huge.
IDD represents only one example of how OPNET solutions enabled Jason’s team to provide quick results on application performance issues, often with no prior knowledge of the application. As a result, the team has been highly successful.

“An Intermittent Needle in an Enterprise Haystack”

A serious intermittent performance problem was detected at the U.S. Coast Guard Operations Systems Center in an enterprise web application. The application was planned to be deployed into production in only 2 weeks, with 60,000 projected users. The system encompassed dozens of servers supporting a dozen different roles, and is distributed across four different security zones of the network.
Utilizing OPNET’s ACE Analyst and ACE Live, USCG was able to diagnose that a particular device was intermittently disrupting network traffic between two backend servers, causing the performance issues.
The application deployment was able to proceed.

“Better Management for Business-Critical Applications”

Tech Data Corporation uses OPNET Panorama and ACE Live to manage OneDesk, their CRM application and sales order entry system system. OneDesk is the “life blood” of Tech Data, supporting 800 users in 3 countries.
Inconsistent and unpredictable application performance was a serious problem for Tech Data prior to rolling out ACE Live and Panorama. Users complained about response times being poor, particularly at the end of each business month and quarter, impacting peak sales and data entry periods. No one had been able to pin-point the cause.
Tech Data Corporation implemented OPNET Panorama and immediately identified poorly coded database queries in the sales representative portal and data mining interface. Month-end issues were reduced when these were fixed, as well as some intermittent issues.
ACE Live was implemented to monitor end-to-end response time, which identified additional issues in remote regions.
As a result of OPNET solutions and the resulting ability to better manage OneDesk end-to-end performance, users are now pleased with response time and sales representatives are able to enter orders quickly and efficiently.
