(NASDAQ: OPNT), a leading provider of management software for networks and applications, today announced that OPNET Analysis, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary, has been awarded the first of four possible contract extensions to continue to enhance the U.S. Department of Defense's Network Warfare Simulation (NETWARS), a software application for analyzing defense-related network communications. Today's announcement follows OPNET's successful delivery of software and services as prime contractor for NETWARS in 2003. Under the contract extension, additional software and services will be delivered in 2004 with funding of $3.5 Million, with three additional option years to be evaluated annually by the DoD. Since OPNET was awarded the re-competed contract in January 2003, the total funding under the contract, including this award, is $6.6 million. The NETWARS project is part of the Department of Defense's vision for achieving information superiority by optimizing military communications in realistic warfighter scenarios. The objectives for the NETWARS software environment include simulating major theaters of war involving thousands of communications nodes, conducting communications burden analysis, contingency planning analysis, and evaluating emerging technologies in full Joint Task Force warfighting scenarios. OPNET's CEO, Marc Cohen, stated, "OPNET is proud of our long history of successfully delivering software and services to meet the needs of the Defense community. Network-centric warfare is revolutionizing the way the US conducts military engagements and OPNET is uniquely positioned to support the DoD in making this transformation."
