OPNET Introduces Network Storage Planning Software at
International Conference for Enterprise Computing Systems

New models enable end-to-end analysis and validation of network storage architectures for enterprises

RENO, NV - December 11, 2002 — OPNET Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: OPNT), the leading provider of Intelligent Network Management software, today announced new models for network storage at the 28th International Conference for the Resource Management and Performance Evaluation of Enterprise Computing Systems, hosted by the Computer Measurement Group (www.cmg.org).

OPNET's existing modeling technology for IT Guru, SP Guru, and Modeler products is being extended to analyze the performance and resiliency of storage networks. The new models provide end-to-end analysis of storage infrastructure, including both IP and Fibre Channel technologies.

"It's no surprise that the management challenges confronting Storage Networking are taking the same form as those previously experienced in the IP Networking arena," says Anne Skamarock, Senior Analyst with Enterprise Management Associates. "Enterprises are now focusing their attention on ensuring that their storage infrastructure is designed and deployed to deliver optimum performance and resiliency. With storage playing such a critical role in application architecture, IT professionals must be able to predict the behavior of network storage and understand its contribution to end-to-end application response times."

OPNET's industry-first network storage modeling solution will enable enterprises to:

  • Analyze storage consolidation scenarios, predicting the impact on infrastructure and application response times.
  • Plan for business continuity, assessing if infrastructure can accommodate specific backup and recovery requirements, and meet service level agreements for data replication.
  • Predict storage network performance and resiliency, identifying how 'hot spots' or failures will affect transaction response times.
  • Validate remote storage architectures, quantifying capacity, latency, and QoS trade-offs associated with implementing storage over long distances.

OPNET's existing modeling technology has been implemented by global businesses including Fidelity Investments, FleetBoston Financial, IBM Global Services, and State Street Bank; government agencies including the Federal Aviation Administration, Federal Bureau of Investigation, US Department of Agriculture, US Department of Defense, and US Department of State; and government contractors including Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and Northrop Grumman.

Availability

The next release of OPNET's Model Library, which will include new network storage functionality, is currently planned for the end of January 2003. Demonstrations are being conducted this week in Reno Nevada, at CMG's International Conference for the Resource Management and Performance Evaluation of Enterprise Computing Systems (www.cmg.org).
