OPNET Unveils UMTS Model for Third Generation (3G) Wireless Protocol

-- 3G Consortium Focusing on UMTS Formed by OPNET; Members Include AT&T Wireless, Hutchison 3G, France Telecom R&D, NTT DoCoMo, Samsung, NEC, SK Telecom, mDiversity, Golden Bridge Technologies, FG Microtec & CelPlan --

BETHESDA, MD - August 28, 2001 - OPNET Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: OPNT), the leading provider of intelligent network management software, today announced the introduction of new modeling software specifically designed to evaluate and optimize third-generation (3G) wireless technology.

UMTS is widely accepted as the standard protocol that will support 3G services and is expected to deliver low-cost, high-capacity mobile communications at rates up to two megabits per second. In March OPNET announced plans to co-develop UMTS models with Telcordia, an effort that has since been completed successfully.

OPNET today further announced members of a new OPNET-sponsored 3G consortium with a mission to provide direction, recommendations and feedback for UMTS model development and implementation. Members to date include preeminent leaders in the 3G market space, notably AT&T Wireless, Hutchison 3G, France Telecom R&D, NTT DoCoMo, Samsung, NEC, SK Telecom, mDiversity, Golden Bridge Technologies, FG Microtec and CelPlan.

"OPNET provides us the ability to design and test proprietary components for our 3G equipment. This saves R&D dollars by reducing design problems before we even build prototypes", said Jan-Am Choi, Principal Engineer at Samsung, "We can design commercial 3G system architectures evaluated against predicted user traffic profiles. In addition, OPNET enables us to communicate the performance advantages of our implementations using graphical output to show enhanced throughput and lower end-to-end delay. This is a significant market advantage when speaking with potential clients."

Taylor Salman, Senior Manager for Market Research at OPNET, added, "Our new UMTS software has been engineered in direct response to marketplace demand. It prepares companies to deploy reliable, cost-effective, and customer-focused 3G services. We are pleased to bring together the best in the business to help set the course for future innovation."

When utilized in conjunction with OPNET's core products, the new UMTS models will specifically enable customers to:

Perform network engineering analysis by streamlining network operations and increasing reliability while optimizing performance and resource utilization;

Support Virtual deployment of QoS policies and enable engineers to understand how different types of traffic, when provided different QoS will affect overall network performance;

Conduct network component failure/recovery and quantify the performance impact and determine network behavior due to node and link failures; and,

Design and validate new architectures, by modeling and analyzing next-generation protocols.
