OPNET Delivers Groundbreaking Optical Planning Solution for Tellium's Service-Provider Customers

Tellium to Resell Software Based on OPNET Netbiz Platform

WASHINGTON, DC -- January 3, 2001 -- OPNET Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: OPNT), the leading provider of intelligent network management software, today announced delivery of leading-edge optical-network planning software for Tellium, Inc., provider of the world's first in-service intelligent optical switches, allowing Tellium to offer service providers planning and management solutions to optimize the performance of optical networks.

The software, developed in conjunction with Tellium, leverages the OPNET Netbiz platform and enables the creation of optical network simulations based on Tellium's optical switch technology. Tellium will resell the software as part of its network planning suite. The new software allows service providers to project the impact of network-element failures on overall network performance as well as identify the root causes of predicted network bottlenecks. These capabilities make it possible for carriers to deliver reliable broadband services in anticipation of growing customer needs. The software also enables service providers to create contingency plans for resuming service within seconds of an interruption.

"Advanced network visualization, simulation of restoration, scalability, and flexibility make OPNET Netbiz the ideal platform for service providers and equipment manufacturers to plan advanced optical networks," said Alain Cohen, President and Chief Technology Officer at OPNET. "We believe the work we've done with Tellium adds tangible value to their offering. Combining our software and project management know-how with the expertise and vision of technology innovators such as Tellium is a winning formula we plan to repeat."

The new Tellium software will also be used internally as part of a suite of planning products to train the Tellium sales force and accelerate the delivery of network proposals to Tellium customers by automating the design process and quantifying predicted infrastructure performance. The software's analyses can remove uncertainty about the reliability and capacity of a proposed optical network by predicting variables such as path-blocking rates, load distributions, restoration latency and network availability.

"The solution we've developed for Tellium addresses the challenge facing so many service providers, namely, to reliably provision business-critical services in dynamic environments," said Cohen. "Tellium's Aurora product line combines extreme scalability and performance with the intelligence to parcel bandwidth on the fly. The OPNET-based planning software will enable Tellium's customers to simulate and evaluate the dynamics of Aurora's light-path creation, fault occurrence and path restoration to maximize their return on investment in these sophisticated systems."
