OPNET Unveils ServiceProvider Guru

New Product Enables Intelligent Network Management for Service Providers

BETHESDA, MD., -- June 26, 2001 -- OPNET Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: OPNT), the leading provider of intelligent network management software, today announced the availability of ServiceProvider Guru, a revolutionary new product for planning and operating service provider networks.

In making today's announcement, Alain Cohen, OPNET President & CTO, stated, "Today's service providers are faced with the challenge of managing the costs and complexities associated with traffic growth, expanding infrastructures, deployment of new services, and adoption of new technologies. Our new product offers immediate ROI by making operations staff more efficient, and planners more effective."

Jerald Murphy, Senior VP of Global Network Strategies at META Group, stated, "Carrier network spending has dropped precipitously, making it very likely that they will look towards performance management and modeling software as a lower cost alternative for increasing the performance of their networks and their ability to offer differentiated services." META Group estimates the market for performance management and modeling software at $4B USD this year, expected to reach $9B USD in 2005.

ServiceProvider Guru (SP Guru) builds on the new 8.0 release of OPNET's core technology, adding significant new features for configuration troubleshooting, change validation, predictive planning, and design optimization. SP Guru provides a virtual network environment that replicates the infrastructure and behavior of a live network, including topology, protocols, traffic, and configuration information. Marc Cohen, CEO of OPNET, stated, "The key differentiator of OPNET's virtual network environment is the level of operational detail that it provides. It understands the protocol configurations and the behaviors that result. No other product on the market comes close to offering this."

SP Guru's NetDoctor feature automates the tedious manual process of identifying configuration problems that cause performance and availability degradation. A scriptable interface allows operators to tailor NetDoctor analyses to accommodate proprietary policies, and to codify years of operational knowledge into a structured, repeatable framework.

SP Guru validates regular operational changes to configurations and capacity allocations before they are committed, reducing the risk of service-level violations. Planning and operations groups are also empowered to prepare for dynamic events that impact service levels, such as outages and peak traffic loads. Hundreds of failure scenarios can be examined, quickly identifying risk areas such as unroutable customer traffic, and insufficient or improperly configured backup resources that can lead to excessive congestion. "SP Guru works with dynamic traffic loads that can be taken from historical traffic information", stated Alain Cohen. "When a failure occurs, traffic routing shifts, and while traffic levels may be supportable at that time, the network operator may have only a few hours before intensifying traffic leads to severe congestion. SP Guru can tell the operator how much time they have and then also validate a solution to the problem prior to deployment. The last thing you want is to create another problem in the process of fixing the original one."

SP Guru also ships with new forms of analysis, simulation, and optimization that facilitate traffic engineering and network design, including technologies from the Make Systems acquisition in March. SP Guru incorporates the most advanced simulation engine and network model library available for detailed analyses, new QoS-savvy hybrid simulation for fast simulation runtimes, and design primitives that enable the software to recommend network designs based on pre-defined cost and performance criteria. "Detailed QoS studies that used to take days or hours to analyze can now be done in minutes or seconds, without sacrificing accuracy," commented Pradeep Singh, OPNET's Senior Vice President of Engineering.

"With the release of a service provider-specific offering, OPNET intends to leverage an already lengthy list of service provider customers using the company's existing software solutions", said Marc Cohen. "The new capabilities of SP Guru allow OPNET solutions to span across the service provider organization, from planning and engineering to the network operations center."
