Terawave Leverages OPNET Software to Deliver Optical Access Solutions
Terawave Using OPNET Software for Design and Validation of Passive Optical Network Technology

HAYWARD, Calif. & WASHINGTON -- Dec.14, 2000 -- OPNET Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:OPNT ), the leading provider of intelligent network management software, and Terawave Communications, Inc., the leading innovator of optical access solutions, today announced that Terawave is using OPNET's predictive modeling platform to develop its Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation (DBA) algorithms and proprietary communications protocols for Passive Optical Network (PON) and Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) networking equipment.

``Passive optical networking provides massively scalable, cost-effective broadband connectivity for next-generation Internet and content-rich applications,'' said Siddhartha Devadhar, Senior Manager of Applications Engineering at Terawave. ``Terawave's solutions are a key enabler of PONs. Our patented technology implements DBA algorithms in silicon. These state-of-the-art communication protocols and traffic-management algorithms allow operators to provide differentiated services and QoS-based Service Level Agreements.''

``OPNET is an essential component of Terawave's technology development, allowing us to easily compare alternate solutions and evaluate the relative merits of different options,'' added Devadhar. ``OPNET helps us design and validate our technology quickly and reliably.''

``As the demand for optical technologies continues to expand, so does the competitive pressure among equipment vendors,'' said Alain Cohen, President and Chief Technology Officer at OPNET. ``Innovators in fibre-based communication, such as Terawave, rely on OPNET's predictive software to validate algorithms and equipment designs in realistic scenarios, with extreme precision, thereby delivering highly optimized products and accelerating time to market.''

In the local loop, PONs can deliver voice, video and high-speed data directly to the office, providing affordable and efficient analog cable TV, phone connections, and high-speed Internet access to each subscriber.

Terawave's multi-speed PON platform allows symmetrical 155 Mbps and 622 Mbps PON cards to be mixed in the Terawave Optical Line Terminals (OLT) to satisfy variations in building density, distances and bandwidth per building.

``As the market for Fiber-To-The-Business continues to grow, solutions such as Terawave's will play an important role for service providers that want to connect small and midsize businesses,'' said Devadhar. ``Terawave's PON access equipment is designed specifically for this market. It enables carriers to distribute the cost of equipment and infrastructure over several subscribers. This modular architecture allows companies to 'pay as they grow' with nearly unlimited bandwidth.''
