SBC Helps Businesses Predict Impact of Network Decisions With Virtual Build-And-Manage Modeling

SBC Enterprise Designer optimizes performance and reduces risk through automated network design, performance modeling and network simulation

SAN ANTONIO, June 28, 2000 -- SBC Communications Inc. (NYSE: SBC) today announced availability of automated design and performance modeling services for complex enterprise networks. With the introduction of SBC Enterprise Designer, a new network modeling tool, SBC can help businesses manage network service levels and reduce the risk of negative performance impacts from new application and technology deployments.

Enterprise Designer enables SBC to generate a comprehensive computer model of a customer's existing local- and wide-area enterprise networks in minutes, project the impact that new applications, technologies and traffic patterns will have on the network's performance, virtually deploy and test various solutions for maintaining desired service levels, and develop a schedule and budget for optimal network upgrades.

"Network performance is fundamental to business performance in today's enterprises," said J. Thomas McGrath, President SBC DataComm. "SBC Enterprise Designer is the most powerful tool available for helping businesses build and manage high-performance enterprise networks and guarantee service levels that support their business needs."

SBC Enterprise Designer integrates and customizes two industry-leading network modeling software solutions into a complete network mapping and scenario simulation tool that operates on an industry-standard laptop PC. The tool creates interactive network maps with click-through details on each network device and performance-level graphics illustrating impacts of network design and use variables.

SBC Enterprise Designer's network discovery, documentation and design capabilities are enabled through Netformx, Inc. software. The Netformx library of network devices supports the mapping of existing networks in minutes, including click-through configuration and option details on network devices from all major manufacturers. The software also supports design, validates interoperability of devices, and can instantly create an equipment bill of materials for a project.

IT DecisionGuru software from OPNET Technologies, Inc. supports SBC Enterprise Designer's modeling, simulation, traffic analysis and predictive capabilities. It creates graphic displays of projected service levels achieved though alternative courses of action in a virtual network environment. It also enables SBC to enhance customer network performance from its network operations centers after the solution has been deployed.

"SBC is the first network integration company to integrate and customize these industry leading solutions from Netformx and OPNET and make their combined modeling capabilities available to support enterprise customers," said McGrath. "We believe that SBC Enterprise Designer's design and simulation capabilities will give our customers the network performance edge that will help them succeed."
