![]() OPNET Facilitating Standards Development for Wireless Networking OPNET Supporting Efforts of IEEE Task Group to Standardize Wireless LAN QoS; Task Group Includes Industry Leaders from AT&T, Intel, Philips, Sharp and ShareWaveWASHINGTON, DC -- November 27, 2000 -- OPNET Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:OPNT ), the leading provider of intelligent network management software, announced that members of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 Task Group E are developing a common simulation framework using OPNET Modeler software to evaluate standards proposals for wireless LAN quality of service (QoS). The task group is comprised of top minds from leading wireless equipment manufacturers, service providers and software developers. They have been given the responsibility to study alternative standards proposals and provide recommendations to the full IEEE 802.11 membership. The standards ultimately embraced by IEEE will guide the development of QoS technologies that will enable next-generation wireless networks. ''We understand that the future of communications will be increasingly wireless and we're excited to lend our expertise so that companies around the world can develop open, compatible wireless solutions,'' said Matthew Sherman, a researcher at AT&T Labs and Chair of the ad hoc group on Simulations, Metrics and Criteria for IEEE 802.11 Task Group E. ''Standards not only benefit product developers but consumers who want to be confident that their purchases won't become obsolete as soon as they're made. The goal of our work is to ratify meaningful standards that minimize R&D risks, accelerate product development and spur innovation.'' ''The standards process is crucial to the coherent development and broad adoption of new technologies and we applaud the work of industry standards bodies such as IEEE,'' said Todd Kaloudis, Vice President of Marketing at OPNET. ''Predictive modeling plays a key role in uncovering important performance issues related to wireless networking, including QoS and traffic prioritization. This insight is vital for sound decision making throughout the evaluation and ratification of standards.'' About IEEE 802 IEEE 802 falls under the IEEE's ''Information Technology'' working group. IEEE 802 develops networking standards focused primarily on the lowest two layers of the Reference Model for Open Systems Interconnection (OSI). IEEE 802 coordinates with other national and international standards groups, and many standards initiated by IEEE 802 have been published as international standards. About OPNET Technologies, Inc. The OPNET family of intelligent network management software enables customers to optimize the performance and maximize the availability of communications networks and networked applications. The OPNET product suite combines predictive simulations and a comprehensive understanding of networking technologies to enable network professionals to more effectively design and deploy networks, diagnose network and application performance problems, and predict the impact of proposed network modifications.
