Record Attendance, White House keynote Address Focus Industry Attention on OPNETWORK '99 Users Conference

MIL 3 Hosts Largest Conference Ever to Focus on Decision Support for Network Professionals, Featured Speakers Provide Insight into Future of Networking Technologies and the Internet

WASHINGTON, DC -- September 3, 1999 -- MIL 3, Inc., a leading provider of decision-support software for networks and applications, kicked off the OPNETWORK '99 worldwide users' conference with keynote presentations by Thomas Kalil, special assistant to President Clinton for economic policy and a member of the President's National Economic Council (NEC), and Scott Toborg, Ph.D., technical chairman of OPNETWORK '99 and a leading technologist with Teledesic LLC.

Attendance at this year's event topped 500, an increase of more than 65 percent over 1998. The attendees represent 20 countries on four continents, making OPNETWORK '99 the largest international conference ever convened to focus on decision support for professionals in all areas of networking and information technology. During the five-day event that runs from August 30 through September 3, attendees are scheduled to hear over 260 hours of presentations from 70 speakers regarding the use of network modeling and simulation for decision support.

"OPNETWORK is exploding in size and scope as people become increasingly aware of the unmatched resource-saving and time-saving decision-support capabilities of simulation," said Alain Cohen, MIL 3's co-founder and chief technology officer. "With our core technology established as a de facto standard, we are now focused on further reducing the time, complexity and opportunity for human error in the modeling process through enhanced automation. Over the long term, this should pave the way for tools that translate simulation results automatically into actions that dramatically accelerate and simplify design, deployment, and operational processes."

Kalil's discussion focused on the Clinton administration's efforts to establish a climate ideally suited for the growth of networking technologies and the Internet. Kalil, the NEC's point person for technology and telecommunications, challenged the networking industry to end "the world wide wait" by investing heavily in broadband technologies. Kalil also mentioned important research currently underway that relies heavily on advanced modeling and simulation to develop networked applications that run up to 1,000 times faster than today's commercial applications.

Toborg officially opened the five-day event with a presentation that discussed the evolving role and innovative applications for network simulation. Toborg predicted that customers will eventually be able to use simulations to design their own needs-based network services instead of relying on the limited selection of service-provider options. In the near term, Toborg said that he expects simulation data to become more actively incorporated into the network-implementation process; for example, service providers may use the data to create bills of material while customers could use the data to create network-usage policies.
