HP, MIL3 First In The Industry To Integrate Network Management, Measurement And Planning

HP OpenView NetMetrix, Network Node Manager and MIL 3 OPNET Planner to Provide Industry's Total network management Solution

BOSTON, Mar. 3, 1998 -- Continuing to offer customers unmatched enterprise management solutions, Hewlett-Packard Company and MIL 3, Inc. today announce they have signed an exclusive technology and marketing agreement to integrate their network management, measurement and planning solutions. Under terms of the agreement, MIL 3, a worldwide leader in network modeling and simulation software, and HP will engage in cooperative development and marketing efforts to provide seamless integration of MIL 3's OPNET Planner with both HP OpenView NetMetrix and Network Node Manager to make network planning an integral component of HP's network-services management solution. The announcement was made here at the HP OpenView Universe '98 show and conference, which runs through March 4.

"To maximize the value of its network, a company must understand the capacity, performance and health of its existing resources, what it can expect as user demands on the network grow, and what additional resources are needed to achieve business objectives," said Marc Cohen, MIL 3's chief executive officer. "The HP/MIL 3 relationship was created to help customers accomplish this with HP's complete solution for managing and monitoring network devices, network performance and network traffic integrated with MIL 3's powerful 'what if' planning for network expansion and upgrades."

Work between the companies began in 1997, when MIL 3 became a HP OpenView Premier Partner. Today's announcement is the next step in a relationship that both companies expect will significantly enhance the ability of information technology (IT) departments to manage network services. Network planning, along with network availability and performance management, is vital to comprehensive network-services management. However, successfully incorporating network planning into the service-management process requires a level of integration that is not available today and is at the heart of this agreement.

"What really matters is giving customers value -- real solutions to real problems that other vendors simply can't provide," said Jeff Thiemann, general manager of HP's NetMetrix Division. "Communications networks are indispensable for success in today's hyper-competitive, global marketplace. The OPNET and OpenView product families represent superior technologies that provide operational and financial efficiencies to our customers by helping them manage their business-critical networks as efficiently as possible today while effectively planning how to expand those networks for tomorrow."

Integrated Network Planning

The triad of HP OpenView NetMetrix and Network Node Manager, and MIL 3's OPNET Planner further strengthens the HP OpenView information technology (IT) Service Management initiative. MIL 3's powerful simulation and modeling technology can leverage the information available in HP OpenView to provide greater accuracy in predicting future network performance and capacity bottlenecks without affecting users on the production network. These performance estimates can be used to develop aggressive service-level agreements with greater confidence.

"With the growth of intranets, switched environments and other information technologies, the importance of the network continues to grow," said Thiemann. "Our close working relationships with leading companies, such as our recent development efforts with Cisco and today's announcement with MIL 3, underscore the importance to HP of providing network management and network service-assurance solutions."
