HP Announces MIL 3 As An HP OpenView Premier Partner

MIL 3's OPNET Family of Network Modeling and Simulation Tools Passes HP OpenView Certification Testing and Complements HP's Growing Presence in Service-level Management and Capacity Planning.

Palo Alto, Calif., Oct. 8, 1997 -- Hewlett-Packard Company today announced that MIL 3, the company that pioneered the technology of network simulation software, has acheived HP OpenView Premier Partner Status and that its OPNET family of software tools has passed HP OpenView Certification Testing.

"The HP OpenView Premier Partnership is a significant endorsement of MIL 3's efforts to make life easier for IT managers," said Marc Cohen, MIL 3's chief executive officer. "Our software is like electronic modeling clay for networks," continued Cohen. "OPNET Planner automatically reads HP Network Node Manager and HP NetMetrix data, to create and maintain a software simulation that matches the actual network traffic and flow. "OPNET Planner makes it possible for IT managers to see how their networks will perform, before committing to a network design or deploying new applications. A simulation can be used to accurately predict capacity limits without affecting users on the actual network. This makes it easier for IT managers to better predict and manage service levels."

"HP" is always looking to enhance the HP OpenView solutions portfolio by partnering with technology leaders such as MIL 3," said Oliver Helleboid, general manager of the HP OpenView Software Division. "As we continue to expand our collective offerings in predictive service management, our customers will benefit greatly from MIL 3's advanced network simulation technology in combination with HP's end-to-end enterprise-management tools."

"Integration of OPNET with network management tools will simplify the task of creating predictive models before I make changes to networks," said Patrick Rafferty, Advisory Engineer at Lockheed Martin Idaho Technologies. "This will streamline the process of constructing a baseline model that matches our existing traffic and topology. From there, I can modify the model to predict how the system will respond to changes in topology or traffic load from new applications and users."

"We already use OPNET for our high-level system design, but the ability to automatically update our baseline model to reflect our changing network configuration will allow us to use simulation to design more fine-grained improvements as well."

MIL 3's OPNET Planner is a powerful application for predictive service management. MIL 3's powerful OPNET simulation technology and high-fidelity device and link models can now leverage information from the HP OpenView network database in order to rapidly predict network performance in many scenarios. These performance estimates can be used to develop service level agreements (SLA's) with greater confidence. Opnet Planner helps IT managers predict the availability and performance of current and proposed information systems.

In order to acheive Premier Partner Status. MIL 3 has integrated OPNET Planner with the HP OpenView Suite to solve the following predictive service management problems quickly and easily:

  • Application deployment. What effect will deploying a new network application have on the quality of service of my current applications? What quality of service will the deployed applications have?
  • Technology changes. What effect will deploying a new network technology have on the quality of service of current and proposed applications?
  • Topology and configuration changes. How will the quality of service of current and proposed applications be affected by moving servers or changing routing protocols?
  • Network failures. What effect will a given failure scenario have on the availability and performance of my network?
