NEC Network Laboratories in Heidelberg, Germany, is responsible for the design of a core component of NEC’s WiMAX base station, which is based on the 802.16e-2005 standard. The objective of this component is to maximize the network capacity while providing the required Quality of Service (QoS) to applications. NEC selected OPNET Modeler® to validate its product design.

While the WiMAX technology offers multiple scheduling services to support different applications’ QoS requirements, the actual mechanism for QoS provisioning is vendor-specific. NEC customized the underlying code of OPNET’s WiMAX model to design a proprietary QoS scheduler based on 802.16e-2005 SOFDMA (Scalable Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access) technology. Designs were validated by conducting simulations of expected WiMAX networks deployments. NEC created its own custom performance metrics to evaluate simulation outputs, in addition to OPNET’s built-in statistics, to ensure optimal equipment performance.

“We have been a member of the OPNET WiMAX Model Development Consortium since its inception. By modeling our cutting-edge technology in OPNET Modeler we are able to cut costs and accelerate time-to-market. We can thus concentrate our R&D resources on the differentiating aspects of our projects where we can realize true competitive advantage.”
