Fujitsu Optimises Application Performance, Router Configurations, and Security Policies with OPNET IT Guru

Background:
Fujitsu Services is one of the leading IT services companies in Europe, Middle East and Africa with over 30 years of experience in designing, building, and operating IT systems for customers in the financial services, telecom, retail, utilities and government markets .

Objective:
Fujitsu have a private MPLS network to provide IT managed services for customers in the commercial and public sectors. As part of a perpetual service improvement activity, Fujitsu were looking for ways to reduce the manual work in designing the network reconfiguration for problem scenarios and to validate their designs for performance and availability in a broad range of scenarios. Networks were frequently required to be re-designed after deployment with time spent configuring and maintaining router and switch devices using a long and tedious process to minimise errors. Fujitsu wanted to find a better way forward that enabled them to remove this rework and provide improved service for their customers.

Solution:
After examining the market place, for tools to automate and improve these processes, Fujitsu decided to implement OPNET IT Guru [NetDoctor®] and use its Virtual Network Environment to design and test various network configurations in the software before the actual deployment. This allowed potential problems to be predicted and resolved proactively, which in turn reduced the number of network re-designs required.

Fujitsu engineers also used OPNET software to regularly identify and troubleshoot the inevitable problems that occurred in network device configurations. Thanks to its automated configuration rules-checking engine, tasks that took days -- or that were completely impractical to accomplish at first -- could be completed in a matter of hours. The OPNET solution found problems in router configurations by applying routing, addressing, and access control policy-related rules.  This directly reduced network downtime and prevented network security from being compromised.

David Carter, Senior Consultant, Fujitsu Network Management team, believes that OPNET software has allowed Fujitsu to provide better service to their existing customers, and will help them attract new ones.

“OPNET was selected to add value by allowing Fujitsu to optimise network performance, including right-sizing links, minimizing mistakes in router configurations and even pointing out inefficient configurations. We have already experienced the benefit of using OPNET software through the reduced number of customer trouble tickets. ”
